According to the latest forecast, some communities north and west of us may receive a dusting of snow overnight and in the morning. For the NYC area, we are not expecting much IF ANY snow, but it will probably get down below freezing overnight. Be careful coming to school tomorrow, watch out for possible ice on the roads.
Santa Pictures are Wednesday, November 19. Students taking pictures may dress up.
On Thursday, November 13, Mrs. Sarno will be reading throughout the school from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. This is a challenge sponsored by the National Library of Congress as part of National Young Reader's Week. In completing this challenge, the school is entered into a drawing for 101 copies (one of them autographed!) of the newest Wimpy Kid book, The Long Haul.

Tonight NASA will launch an Antares rocket from the east coast of Virginia. Due to weather conditions, this may be visible in our area! Launch time is 6:45 and NY should be able to see it within a couple minutes of launch. It will look like an orange dot rising in the sky and you might even be able to see the exhaust plume.

Students should wear their dress uniforms for Picture Day.
Paid Dress Down will be every Friday unless notified otherwise.

Back to school season coincides with an increase in the viruses that cause fever, vomiting, diarrhea and breathing problems. These include noroviruses ("stomach flu"), influenza and enteroviruses (EV-D68 quickly spreads among children and can cause serious respiratory illness).
Simple actions can help stop viruses from spreading:
Wash hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds.
Cover cough and sneezes with a tissue or your sleeve.
Disinfect frequently touched surfaces.
Avoid sharing eating utensils and cups.
Children with fever, vomiting or diarrhea should stay home until the symptoms are gone (for 24 hours without medication) or until a doctor says it's okay to return.
Get vaccinated against the flu (getting infected with
both EV-D68 and influenza at the same time could lead to severe illness).
NYC DOH now requires influenza vaccination for all Nursery and Pre-K children.
Please return all medical forms issued to your child by a school nurse in September ASAP. All immunizations are mandated by law.
There is still time to sign up for band if you have not already. Please bring your form in as soon as possible. Stop by the office if you need a new form.
Band will be every Thursday unless otherwise notifed. Don't forget to bring your instrument.
Note to all parents and students: Please be respectful of our neighbors!
-There have been some issues regarding our neighbors. We have received calls asking that we refrain from blocking driveways, sitting on steps, dropping garbage on the sidewalk or street, etc. Please be mindful of our community and taking care of the people and places around us.
-Parents, it is important that EVERY student return the E-Rate survey. Funding depends in part on percentage of surveys returned, and it is calculated by total enrollment, not by number of families. Remember that each child that returns the survey by Friday, September 12 will get to dress down for free on Thursday, September 18!
If the survey is not in by today, it does still need to be returned, but the dress down will not be available.
IF YOUR CHILD WAS ABSENT TODAY (Friday) and brings it in Monday, he/she will get the dress-down credit for Thursday.
-Paid dress down begins in two weeks, on SEPTEMBER 26. Please see Mrs. Silvery if you need assistance with that.
If you accidentally dressed down today thinking this was the start, then you just have to skip the September 26 dress-down.
-The website is running more smoothly now; however, we are aware that some are still having issues. They are being worked on and in some cases may take a little time to resolve. Thank you for your patience with this slightly bumpy start.
Monday, September 8, 2014
The website is mostly up and running. We are aware that there are still glitches and rest assured that every issue you report to us or to the teacher is passed along immediately to the team working on the site.
Please be aware that the website should never replace a student writing down homework in class, as they are given ample time to do. It is essential to build responsibility that they are held accountable for this everyday task.
If you continue to have problems, please go to the top right corner of the website, click on log in/register and click on the newly added HELP button. Type in information as instructed and someone will get back to you as soon as possible. Thank you for your continued patience and support.
Due to technical difficulties (a stubborn copier!) not all classes were able to receive their paper copies of the handbook today. However, you can still view the handbook by going to the "Parents" button on the top of this page, and clicking on "Parent/Student Handbook". Thank you.
Please re-register on this new site!
Parents and students, if you have not registered on this new site olgbk.org, please take a moment and do that today. Use the tab in the upper right hand corner to begin. You need to do this even if you were already registered on the old site. Thank you.
Please be patient as we improve our web presence to be bigger and better. In the meantime, if you have any questions, please give us a call in the office at 718-375-2081!
Please see the events sidebar for this week's schedule and events!
